Jeff Furman, recently appeared in an interview for Sarder TV with Russell Sarder, CEO of NetCom Learning. In the interview Jeff talks about how his motivation for becoming a trainer grew out of his desire to help people. He discusses how he really focuses on the needs of the students and finds joy in helping students achieve certifications and move ahead in their careers as the result of training. The fool proof method for teaching project management, according to Furman, involves providing the fundamentals, demonstrating the material, and then hands on exercises to ensure that the students understand the material.
Jeff Furman is one of NetCom Learnings most respected instructors, said Russell Sarder, CEO of NetCom Learning. His dedication and passion for training comes through in every course he teaches, said Sarder.
In the interview with Soma Bhatlacharya, the NetCom Learning instructor discusses how he ended up as a project manager and teacher. Jeff refers to his journey to becoming a project manager as Accidental PM. He started out as an IT technical trainer for a New York brokerage firm where he created and taught quick start courses for the software tools used by the IT coders. This eventually rolled into fulltime job providing technical project management for a variety of IT projects at the brokerage. His first major job in his new role was managing the roll out of an IT Change Management System that would be used by the firms hundreds of IT developers. His success with the project led Jeff to his current professional career in project management.
One of Jeffs most challenging and satisfying work has been the training he has provided to the US Army. He has traveled to army bases across the country providing onsite training in project management. He enjoys working with the motivated Army students in addition to their senior leaders who take the training right along with the soldiers they supervise.
Jeffs secret to success which he imparted to Soma, is sticking to his position even when it was unpopular to do so. Ethics is a major part of his belief system as he focuses on what is in the best interest of both his customers and his business. This ability to focus on what was right and ethical has earned him the respect of his colleagues and his customers. He also credits his success as a trainer to the rigorous training Train the Trainer Presentation Skills class he took with NetCom Learning. As a result of the skills class training and other course work, Jeff was able to take and pass the CompTIA CTT+ Certified Technical Trainer certification. He has also found that the training he provides to NetCom Learning students has helped him in being able to hone his communication skills in working with people with different skill levels and backgrounds. It has also improved his skill level in project management in different areas of project management including requirement gathering, consensus building, goal setting, influencing skills, team building, customer satisfaction, quality management, scope management and time management.
In the interview, Jeff offers prospective new project managers advice on how to become proficient in their chosen field. He emphasizes the need for hands on deep dive live classes in addition to reading books on the subject such as The Goal by Eliyahu Goldratt. He also states that there are three major qualities that anyone interested in pursuing a career in project management must have. These include being long term results oriented, a strong sense of ethics and professionalism and a dedication to being a lifelong learner, the pursuit of which is the goal behind the success of NetCom Learning.
