New York, New York (PRWEB) January 03, 2013
Biomet hip implant lawsuits consolidated in U.S. District Court, District of Northern Indiana, continue to move forward, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. The second Case Management Conference in the litigation is scheduled for Monday, January 7, 2013. In an Order dated December 18, 2012, the Court directed attorneys for both sides to submit an agenda for Mondays conference by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 4th. (In re: Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation MDL No. 2391)
All of the Biomet hip implant lawsuits pending in the litigation share similar allegations that the metal-on-metal design of the Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Replacement can shed dangerously high levels of metal ions into surrounding tissue and blood stream. Plaintiffs further allege that this phenomenon can cause metallosis, as well as premature failure of the implant.
We continue to hear from patients who suffered painful complications, including metallosis and premature device failure, allegedly due to the Biomet M2a Magnum Hip. We look forward to this litigation moving forward in the New Year, says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free confidential Biomet hip implant lawsuit reviews to individuals allegedly injured by the Biomet M2a Magnum Hip device.
Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Lawsuits
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is currently reviewing the safety of metal-on-metal hip implants such as the Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Replacement. According to the agency, metal particles shed by such devices can result in an adverse local tissue reaction that causes damage to bone and/or tissue surrounding the implant and joint. This can cause the implant to become loose or cause pain, leading to revision surgery. There are also some medical case reports of patients in which high levels of metal ions in the bloodstream may have caused other types of symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body, including effects on the heart, nervous system, and thyroid gland, according to the FDA.*
Biomet hip implant lawsuits are just one of several large federal litigations involving metal-on-metal hip replacements. Other multidistrict litigations established for metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuits include: In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2197), in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio; In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. Pinnacle Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2244), in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas; and In re: Wright Medical Technology, Inc., Conserve Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2329), in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Georgia.
