Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) November 30, 2012
The husband of an obese Bronx woman who died from kidney failure after being turned down by two airlines because of her weight is speaking out against Delta and KLM airlines. According to a Nov. 26 CBS News report, Vilma and Janos Soltesz traveled to their native Hungary on vacation in September. They had booked two seats for Vilma Soltesz for her return flight to New York, but both Delta and KLM refused to accommodate her because of her size.
According to the article, she was 56 years old and weighed about 425 pounds. Soltesz was “given the runaround” for nine days as she tried to get back home and resume her medical treatment, the report states. By the time the couple could find a flight, it was too late and Soltesz died because of lack of proper treatment, her husband told the news media. Both Delta and KLM issued statements to CBS saying that they did everything to assist the family, but were unable to help because they could not get her on board the aircraft.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 35.9 percent of adults 20 years and older are obese in the United States. Also, about 34 percent of adults who are 20 and older are overweight in the United States.
Airline carriers have a responsibility to ensure the safety and security of all their passengers, said John Bisnar, founder of the Bisnar | Chase personal injury law firm. “When one-third of our population is obese, it is about time our airlines find a solution to accommodate them. They are consumers too and it is important that their rights be protected.”
These passengers already face enough humiliation because they must often purchase two seats on airlines, Bisnar said. “When an airline refuses to let them travel after they have purchased the tickets, it is appalling. Airlines must come up with an equitable solution, especially for passengers who have a serious health issues.”
