Hail to the Chiefs (iUniverse, August 2012) a new novel hitting the shelves, is a book that author Stephen Poppoon has been waiting to write, in one way or another, for forty years. The story behind the novel began long ago, when he and a group of fellow teammates looked to change soccer on a college campus, and in turn changed themselves. It was on the field and off – that forever transformed the way they saw the world. In Hail to the Chiefs, there is a connection to an earlier time and place, a college rich in traditions, and characters learning to become men. Readers are invited to read the first chapter at http://stevepoppoonauthor.com.
In Hail to the Chiefs, it is 1969 and five outstanding high school soccer players have enrolled at Bainbridge University, where football is everything and soccer has only just become a varsity sport. The new coach has never played the sport, the upcoming schedule is killer, and the team has only won two games in the past year. Life is about to become very challenging for five college freshman used to being winners.
Andrew Paxton, a leader on the former high school soccer powerhouse, is now sharing a dorm room with his best friend and star teammate, Brian Barrett, who has chosen Bainbridge to put behind him the breakup with his girlfriend. But trouble soon brews when Barrett clashes with the coach and members of the football team. Paxton, ever loyal to his best friend, has silently and agonizingly carried a torch for Barretts ex-girlfriend for years. Meanwhile, the soccer team faces one hurdle after another after Barrett threatens to quit, the team loses one of its stars, and the coachs inexperience becomes painfully obvious.
During a time when soccer was still in its infancy in the United States, the players must try to turn around a losing college program and, in the process, come to grips with the realities of friendship and love.
Captivating, enthralling and at times subtle, Poppoon has crafted a compelling story that tests the bonds of friendship, trust, and community, and just how fragile they can be. It is now available to purchase on all major e-retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, ebookstore, iUniverse and on its own hub http://stevepoppoonauthor.com.
All book royalties from the Hail to the Chiefs will go to the Military Warriors Support Foundation http://www.militarywarriors.org.
