McDaniel College announces the appointment of associate professor Amy McNichols, chair of the department of foreign languages, as the director of Global Initiatives.
McDaniel’s Global Initiatives expands the colleges commitment to international education through new academic programming, globally-themed extracurricular activities, and innovative approaches to travel learning, such as study abroad, as well as global experiential and civic engagement opportunities.
In conjunction with the new office of Global Initiatives, McDaniel is launching the Global Fellows program in Spring 2013. The structured three-year program is open to freshmen and designed to enhance their understanding of global issues, develop heightened intercultural competency and cultivate the skills and attitudes important to leading successful lives in a global context. Students in the Global Fellows program can participate in workshops, activities, study abroad and coursework with a global focus. Students earn a Global Fellow designation on their transcript upon completion of the program.
We want students to understand that global education isnt just a couple of classes, according to McNichols. The goal is inter-cultural competencydeveloping a deep and comprehensive understanding of our complex, increasingly interconnected world. The next generation will only be much better prepared for the future by knowing more ways to live in the world and how to interact with people from many different cultures.
Amy McNichols joined the faculty at McDaniel in 2003. She received a Ph.D. in Spanish American Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned masters degrees from Binghamton University and a bachelors degree from the University of Scranton. Her experience abroad includes programs in Mexico, Bolivia and Spain. She resides in Westminster, Md.
