Initiative measure http://ag.ca.gov/cms_attachments/initiatives/pdfs/i1044_11-0099_(genetically_engineered_food_v2).pdf [Proposition 37 __title__ Proposition 37] will be on the ballot in November. Massage School San Diego (MSSD) expressed their concern over this measure and provided an explanation to its readers on how the proposition can impact the labeling of foods should Prop 37 be passed in the coming election.
MSSD stated that the propositions main point is to label foods that have been genetically modified. This would in turn notify consumers to what foods have and have not been genetically engineered. MSSD supports the stance that consumers should have the choice to choose which types of food to purchase, but is uncertain about the ramifications of additional wording in Prop 37 regarding processed foods and natural food labels.
According to Prop 37, if a food meets any of the definitions in section 11 0808(c) or (d) , and is not otherwise exempted from labeling under section 110809. 2, the food may not in California, on its label, state or imply that the food is “natural” “naturally made”, “naturally grown”, “all natural” or any words of similar import that would have any tendency to mislead any consumer. Section 110808 (d) states Processed foods are any food produced from a raw agricultural commodity that has been subject to processing such as canning, smoking, pressing, cooking, freezing,
dehydration, fermentation or milling. Massage School San Diego warns that this definition could be interpreted in a way that makes a majority of foods unable to be labeled as natural.
Genetic engineering is the process of altering an organisms genes and non-coding sequences of DNA. Plants for food are typically modified to produce a different species, accelerate growth, and create a resistance to disease among other reasons.
MSSD releases to their readers a explanation of Prop 37 and possible concerns about natural food labeling. MSSD advocates healthy eating, healthy living, raw food recipes, and consumer education.
