Fiat 500e Goes to LA Auto Show
Fiat is bringing three versions of its venerable 500 automobile to the upcoming LA Auto Show, but media attention so far has focused on the electric version, called the 500e. Specs on the car are not available yet, but it will almost certainly feature a new front bumper and innovative wheel style. The company expects the new EV to arrive in U.S. showrooms sometime in 2013. At the LA event, Fiat will also show its 500L four-door, as well as the 500 Abarth convertible. Hondas Micro Commuter Prototype Unveiled
Honda Motor Co. intends to market its Micro Commuter EV to drivers who are older than average, but also to couples who have small families. With a top speed of 50 mph and a range of 37 miles, the car uses a lithium-ion battery pack and offers a full charge in under three hours. The Micro Commuter utilizes a tablet that is powered by solar energy cells attached to the roof of the vehicle. Honda spokespersons have indicated that a primary purpose of the design is exploration of solar cells in future models. For the complete story, see:

GM Announces EV, Hybrid Goals
GM hopes to produce a half-million hybrid and electric cars per year by 2017. By early 2013 the companys hybrid and EV portfolio will include the Chevy Volt, the Spark EV, and a number of other hybrid-electric vehicles. If the automakers strategy holds, GMs hybrid and electric vehicles would account for approximately 5 percent of the companys total global sales. Nissan CEO Discusses Global Strategy
Nissans CEO announced that the company looks to capture 8 percent of the global auto market by 2017. The manufacturer expects its Renault electric cars as well as the Nissan Leaf EV to significantly assist market penetration goals. Tesla Model S Named Car of the Year
Motor Trend has named the Tesla Model S Car of the Year. In what is widely considered the biggest prize in the automotive industry, the companys Model S sedan, a plug-in electric vehicle, was chosen over many long-time favorites. In fact, the judging panel for Motor Trend stated that the award was a unanimous victory for the Model S, indicating that the magazine had not voted that way in recent memory. Tesla came out on top of formidable competition from the BMW 3 Series, Porsche 911, Subaru BRZ, and the Lexus GS. For the complete story, see:
